Pigeon droppings do more than look bad. They corrode metal, etch masonry, and carry real health risk. Here is how Chicago buildings clean them up safely and keep the birds from coming back.
Most owners treat bird droppings as a cosmetic annoyance. They are actually an active corrosion problem with a clock on it.
Fresh droppings are acidic, around pH 3 to 4. On painted steel that acid eats through the coating and rusts the metal underneath. On limestone, greystone, and cast stone trim it etches the surface permanently. On concrete stoops and balcony decks it works into the pores and leaves a shadow that will not wash out later. The longer it sits, the more of the damage becomes permanent.
There is a liability side too. Dried droppings on a fire escape landing or back stair tread get slick the moment they take on moisture, and Chicago gives them plenty of chances between lake-driven humidity and summer storms. A tenant slipping on a rear staircase in Rogers Park is a bigger problem than a stained handrail.
Pigeons are creatures of habit, and Chicago's building stock gives them plenty of habits to form. Knowing the pattern lets you inspect in ten minutes.
Start with horizontal surfaces above head height. On greystones and brick two-flats in Logan Square that means the stone cornice, window head trim, parapet cap, and front bay roof. On mid-rise courtyard buildings in Rogers Park, add balcony railings, entry light fixtures, and upper-floor sills.
Then check what nobody looks at. Rear wooden porches and fire escapes are the worst accumulation point on most Chicago buildings, because open joists and landings make excellent roosts and nobody photographs the alley elevation. Flat roof edges and parapet corners come next. Buildings near the elevated tracks in Wicker Park and Lakeview, or near the lake in Hyde Park and Edgewater, see heavier volume than buildings a few blocks inland.
This is the part people skip, and the part that matters most. Accumulated dry droppings can host histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis, both contracted by breathing dust from disturbed material. The risk is small in passing contact and much higher when someone is scraping a decade of buildup off a parapet.
The rule is simple: never scrape, sweep, or blow dry droppings. Wet everything first with a low-pressure sprayer and let it soften. Wet material does not aerosolize, and that one step eliminates most of the risk.
Crews should wear disposable coveralls, nitrile gloves, eye protection, and an N95 or better respirator for anything beyond a light wipe. Bag and tie waste at the site rather than carrying open material through a lobby. If the buildup is more than an inch deep or sits in an enclosed space like an attic, light well, or covered rear porch, that is a job for an equipped crew, not a tech with a putty knife.
